“Rock” Richard Furman Bradford III, 65, died Oct. 25 of a heart attack. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a son of the late Judith and Richard F. Bradford II. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in both the Navy and Marine Corps. He attended the University of South Carolina undergrad and the University of Southern California post graduate work in Eastern European studies. He enjoyed a successful career in import/export services. He was a business owner, entrepreneur and registered nurse in intensive care cardiology.

He had a lifelong love for sailing and made many trips, including a solo trans Atlantic voyage.  His forced retirement due to health issues led to sailing to the Dominican Republic and purchasing a farm where he pursued his passions for literature, music, cuisine and nature.
He is survived by wife Maggie Eliot of the Dominican Republic; brother James Bradford of South Carolina and nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be private.

While recuperating from shrapnel wounds in the Naval hospital in Quang Tri, Vietnam I woke up one morning to see a rather stocky naval corpsman walk through the ward I was in.  The next morning I observed the same individual walking through the ward room.  This individual looked just like Rock Bradford.   Being in a war zone half way around the world and on pain medication I figured I just might be hallucinating.  A few days later I was discharged, prior to leaving the hospital I made inquiries and sure enough found Rock Bradford, we talked a few minutes and I never saw him again after that.  I am sorry to hear he has passed away.  I met Rock when I was an underclassman at MBHS and always liked him.

This post if from Gordon Fritz.

I first met Rock when his parents built a house a block from where I lived. We grew up together as friends, especially while in high school.  I was a year older (class of 1963) and in 1962 when I won the local science fair and was to go to the regional science fair competition in Florence, SC I had to work (DE Georges Red and White groceries) so I asked Rock to go to the fair and represent my entry.  He did and I (now we) won which meant that we were to go to Albuquerque, New Mexico to the international finals.  The following year, Rock wanted to enter the fair again and we worked on another project which also won him a trip to the international finals.  I was attending Coastal Carolina Collage by then but this stared a remarkable similar path for us.  We lost contact with each other at this time but I have read here that we both went on to finish college and ended up in Vietnam as Navy Hospital Corpsman.  I never spoke with Rock again but I have fond memories of us growing up as friends and of his parents and brother, Jim.
