DALLAS | Helen Elizabeth Mates went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, October 7, 2009. She was surrounded by love with her siblings at her side in Dallas.

''Beth,'' as she was known, grew up in Myrtle Beach, and graduated from Myrtle Beach High School. She then attended Stephens College, Columbia, Mo., and graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fashion Merchandising.

Most recently, Beth was employed by Nygard International of Winnipeg, Manitoba as Director of Merchandising for the Investments and Westbound collections, where she created Nygard's Fashion Forward Item of the Year for 2008.

In Dallas, Beth was a member of Stephens College Alumni Association of Dallas, Hillcrest Church, and Gilda's Club. She was an avid golfer, and enjoyed world travel.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Helen Fakoury Mates; and father, Walter Robert Mates.

She is survived by her sister, Carolyn Mates Thomasson Waters of Mt. Pleasant; brothers, Walter Mates of Midway, Ky., and Russell Mates of San Diego, Calif.; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, October 12, 2009 at the First Presbyterian Church, 1300 N. Kings Hwy., Myrtle Beach, with burial to follow in Ocean Woods Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 until 7:30 p.m. Sunday, October 11, 2009 at McMillan-Small Funeral Home, 910 67th Ave. N., Myrtle Beach.
