Dean Todd (1967)

On August 16th 1968 my outfit came under heavy mortar attack just south of the DMZ in Vietnam.  Helicopters came in and evacuated some our wounded but came under heavy fire.  Late that afternoonThe Marine Air Wing in Quang Tri asked for volunteers to fly one more mission to take out the remaining wounded marines.  Just before dark we learned another chopper was inbound.  The helicopter landed, I boarded the chopper and sat right beside the machine gunner on the right side of the chopper.  When the chopper became airborne the gunner leaned over and asked what we had been getting hit with, I turned to look at the gunner and damned if it wasnt Jimmy Mcgovern.  Jimmy had volunteered to go on that mission even though it was not his job.  All I could do was grin. I think I even called him a few choice names.  We all knew Jimmy and I wanted to share this with everyone.
